Blackboard ESL Course

Executive Summary

The above screencast is an overview of my Adult ESL online Blackboard course.  It was done for a Teaching and Learning at a Distance course from my M.Ed. in Education Technology degree.  It gives you a good run down of the different sections I built for this course in Canvas LMS.  The class that I built was an ESL for adults class and for the beginner’s level.  I built an one-unit lesson from lesson one of the sixteen-week eight module course.  It has a introduce yourself to your classmates section and some basic vocabulary words that need to be learned.  This module is called Module 1 – How to Introduce Yourself to Others.  The desired results of this lesson are that the student knows how to introduce themselves to one another.  Some examples of lessons will be saying your name, spelling your name, basic ways to introduce yourself, etc.  Other modules that are setup for the course are:  Module 2 - Tell Others About Yourself and Some Things You Have, Module 3 – Where Do You Work and Live, Module 4 – How to Count Numbers and Tell Time, Module 5 – Asking and Answering Questions, Module 6 - Talking About Your Day and Week, Module 7 – What Do You Do In your Free Time, and Module 8 – Extra Vocabulary Words: Nouns, Verbs, and Adjectives.  Modules two through eight will be blank, but I will setup the lesson placements for them to be filled with similar materials to the Unit 1 lessons in the future.  This course was designed using the ADDIE model for at least this first Module of my class.  The ADDIE model is the simplest model to go by and the reason I like using it.  The step-by-step process of Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation is the general process my mind goes through when designing just about anything.  However, I do like to incorporate the SAM model as I like to review and evaluate as I go along through the design process.  On future modules, I will start to incorporate some the Gagne model.  Steps in this model will be very useful such as:  stimulate recall of prior learning, provide learner guidance, elicit performance, and providing feedback are things to be considered.  Another model that will be used in the design of my class will be Bloom’s Taxonomy.  This model is particularly useful for learning objective design.

Personal Reflection

My online Blackboard course on English as a Second Language was done in a 5 week summer semester course in Distance Learning.  There wasn't a choice of LMS for this course as the course had to be made in Blackboard.  This was perfect for me since I had already used some of the other LMS websites and needed to learn more about Blackboard.  Like my Canvas course some of the tools used to make this type of online class are discussion boards, blogs, wikis, podcasts, screencasts, presentation websites, and web conferencing applications.  In this class, I utilized all of the main sections of a Blackboard class.  The first section was the announcements section that was used for a welcoming announcement for students of the class.   The next section was a Instructor section that introduces me as the instructor.  The Instructor section provides a basic background of my credentials and also provides information of office hours and ways to contact me.  I included a Course Introduction and Syllabus section that both give nice overviews of the class and a breakdown of the different lessons, class policies, and grading scale.  The Course Introduction section also provides a FlipGrid assignment for students to introduce themselves with each other.  The Course Schedule section gives a list of lesson assignments and the due dates for each lessons work.  The Lessons section is the main section of the course and provides 8 two week lessons.  The Class Meetings section was for the bi-weekly zoom meetings with the class.  I also included a Course Evaluation section that would be used at the end of the semester for the students to evaluated the course.
