Visual Literacy

Executive Summary
The seven projects in the links above and the submenu of this page were done for my Visual Literacy course from my M.Ed. in Educational Technology. The seven projects that represent my work in visual literacy are an infographic, newsletter, brochure, ESL promo flyer, business card, logo, and a visual representation of a Robert Frost poem.
The infographic is one that I made using Adobe InDesign and represents the top 25 places in the world to be a digital nomad (remote workers who travel). First, I did research from many websites on the best places in the world for digital nomads to live and work. I then took the places that appeared the most from these websites and ranked from a average score based on cost of living, safety, internet speed, and fun. I used a website called www.nomadlist.com to collect data scores on how they scored these cities in the areas of cost of living, safety, internet speed, and fun. I then made this infographic on a map of the world.
The newsletter project was also made using Adobe InDesign. In this project, you needed to take an older plain looking newsletter and turn it into a more modern newsletter. Since I went to the University of Arkansas, I used a sample old newsletter of the university called "Relative to Teaching". On the front page, I made a nice heading logo title banner. I found banner materials on the and other pictures off the university website. I used different font sets, color schemes, spacing, and even added a original back page with more recent news of the basketball team.
The brochure project is another project done in Adobe InDesign. As with a lot of my projects on this site, I used ESL as the theme for my brochure. The brochure was made for a fictitious website "www.myjobenglish.com". The brochure was a trifold type and had the two outside layers fold in. The rest of the projects were also made in InDesign with similar design concepts and with the business ESL website in mind. The Logo design was made with Illustrator and the Robert Frost poem was made with PhotoShop.
Personal Reflection
Principles of Visual Literacy was a great course with a lot of great projects. Along with all of the project assignments, there was design concept work and reading from the book "Creating Graphics for Learning and Performance". It also gave me the opportunity to update my skillsets in Adobe PhotoShop, Illustrator, and InDesign. Design concepts regarding use of lines, shapes, visual hierarchy, depth, space, color, CARP (contrast, alignment, repetition, proximity), typography, ACE (Analysis, Creation, and Evaluation), and PAT (Principles, Action, Tools). These design concepts along with the use of Adobe design software helped me in the creation of the materials from the links above. These projects helped me to learn the importance of the use of visuals to enhance instructional materials. This is especially important when designing online class materials.
